How Our Flight Simulators Make You Feel Like You’re Really Flying

Are you curious about how our flight simulators create that amazing feeling of real flight?

The Magic of Motion in Our Simulators

Planes don’t usually move sideways, and even when they do, we don’t feel it much. So, how do we make it feel so real?

Think of Riding a Bike

When you brake on a bike, you feel like you’re tipping forward. In our simulators, to mimic braking on the runway, we tip the simulator forward. The screen stays level, so your brain thinks you’re slowing down. For acceleration, we tip the simulator upwards, pressing you back into your seat. Your brain reads this as speeding up while your eyes see the runway.

Turning Feels Different

Turning is a bit more interesting. Like leaning on a bike, you don’t feel like you’re tipping because your body is balanced. Instead, you feel a vertical acceleration. So, in our simulators, we tip upwards a bit when simulating a turn, not to the side. This is more realistic and avoids the common mistake of tipping sideways.

How Your Brain Handles Motion

Your brain is pretty smart! It cancels out expected sensations to stay alert for the next task. For example, when driving over a humpback bridge, the driver doesn’t feel much, but a passenger might feel their stomach drop. In a simulator, even when you’re moving, your brain might not ‘feel’ it, which can sometimes cause motion sickness.

Our Simulators in Action

  • 737 Simulator: Uses hydraulic motion.
  • A320 Simulator: Uses electric motors.
  • 747 Simulator: Doesn’t move but has induced vibrations and strong graphics, making your brain think it’s moving.
